Geology

Our wines exhibit a natural complexity that is a direct reflection of Margarita Vineyard’s rare array of soils.

Indeed, Margarita Vineyard spans five separate soil types that ebb, flow and intermingle throughout the vineyard. Few vineyards boast such a spectrum of geological diversity. This diversity enables us to grow the same varietals in a range of soils, ultimately enhancing the texture and dimension of the resulting wines.   

Margarita Vineyard’s most spectacular soil profile is found along a block that we call Oyster Ridge, where the ground is riddled with petrified oyster shells that testify to the land’s origins as an uplifted sea bed. Volcanic protrusions, riparian rubble and fields of flaky shale are further evidence of the vineyard’s soil complexity.

The five distinct soil types at Margarita Vineyard are:

Ancient Sea Bed
Uplifted ocean floor with large white oyster fossils spilling out of the soil. High calcium content yields high-toned flavors with pretty aromatics.
Sedimentary
An amalgam of eroded stone and organic materials. Richer soil profile lends itself to dry farming; produces pure, plush fruit flavors.
Shale
An abundance of flaky shale from the Monterey formation. Rocky soil profile yields intense flavors with dimension and complexity.
Volcanic
A steep slope composed of volcanic deposits, including rocky basalt. High iron content brings lower yields with excellent flavor concentration.
Granitic
Weathered granite soil composed of diverse minerals with organic deposits. Yields fruit with fine mid-palate weight and rich fruit flavors.
