Malbec excels at our estate Margarita Vineyard, where it benefits from one of the coolest growing environments in the Paso Robles region. To craft this limited-edition Malbec, we chose a small selection of exemplary barrels from the 2010 vintage to offer a rare showcase for the varietal. The 2010 Malbec belongs to our White Label series, which signifies small lots of the highest quality expressed through alternative varietals and unconventional blends.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The 2010 Malbec offers nuanced aromas of wildberry, cedar, mocha and white pepper with savory earthy accents. The palate is elegantly weighted, unfolding with long seamless flavors of blackberry, cherry and pomegranate. A juicy, vibrant finish reveals lingering hints of mineral and spice.
Vineyard Notes
The 2010 Malbec comes from Block 45, which occupies a southwest-facing hilltop in the heart of Margarita Vineyard. Here, the rocky, shale-riddled soils produce intensely flavored Malbec with a bright, racy character. The fruit was harvested on two days in late October and early November after a long, cool growing season, yielding Malbec fruit with fine natural structure. Margarita Vineyard stands alone as the southernmost vineyard in the Paso Robles AVA, nestled into the rugged Santa Lucia Mountain Range approximately 22 miles south of the city of Paso Robles and just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The mountains tower over the property’s western flank, testaments to the tectonic forces that blessed Margarita Vineyard with a rare diversity of soils. The peaks also act as a gateway between the cool marine air to the south and warm inland conditions to the north. The resulting climatic interplay ensures a long growing season, yielding fruit with uncommon balance and vivid varietal character.
Winemaker Notes
Our vision is to craft a Malbec that captures the varietal’s vibrant fruit character while exhibiting natural depth and complexity. Toward that end, half of the wine was fermented using solely native yeasts from the vineyard. The native yeast lots brought added layers to the wine, with a rounder texture and savory notes to complement the brighter fruit of the remaining lots. After fermentation and light pressing, the lots were racked to French oak barrels, where they aged for 22 months prior to final blending. In order to capture the fruit’s natural textural quality, the wine was not filtered prior to bottling.
